The white label is the name that Apple uses to describe its devices, a decision that has drawn criticism from some tech bloggers who say it is a marketing ploy.
The company has since moved to remove the label from its devices and has issued a clarification that no such label exists.
“The white label refers to Apple devices in a wide variety of industries, including the automotive industry, retail, healthcare, financial services, manufacturing, and education,” the company said in a statement.
“We have removed the label and do not endorse any specific brand of white label.
Apple is committed to providing an ecosystem of choices that will enable consumers to choose the best for themselves and their communities.”
A spokesperson for Apple did not respond to a request for comment.
But others say the white label gives Apple too much credit.
“This is one of the big selling points for Apple.
If you have a white box with the word Apple, it’s just a piece of metal that they have to pay to sell you something,” said Peter Eckersley, who founded the white box blog, The Apple Effect.”
They sell everything to us with a name.
They don’t have to put a label on it, so they have the ability to make a lot more money by selling the white boxes and selling them to consumers.”
A white label for a black boxWhite label for the black box is one way that white companies can make money from their devices, even if the white labels are black.
A white company that sells black boxes to customers who are black may also be able to earn money from the white brand by selling black boxes.
“I have a black business that is selling white boxes,” said a white-labeled Apple engineer who asked to remain anonymous.
“It’s very hard to differentiate from a white product.”
Black boxes have been the subject of controversy for years, with critics complaining that they are marketed as black boxes, despite being sold as white boxes.
Apple has responded by saying the label is intended to differentiate white products.
“White is the official color for our devices,” it said in 2012.
“White is also the only color that can be used to identify our products.”
The white labels on black boxes have also sparked criticism, with many saying they are racist.
“I think the way they’ve been done with the white and black labels, I think that’s a huge problem,” said Eric Wollheim, a senior policy analyst at the US-based Electronic Frontier Foundation.
“I think it makes people feel that there’s no difference.”
