Jo Yi, the CEO of NYT, is calling for a more diverse NYT workforce and the elimination of stereotypes, the NYT’s chief operating officer, Michael Schusterman, told Recode.
He also called for more diversity in editorial, but he said the company was working to create a culture of inclusion and diversity.

We need to be better at understanding and acknowledging the different cultures and backgrounds of our readers, he said.
“We’ve got to be bolder and more aggressive to get this company back to the level it should be, which is a reflection of the diversity of our audience and the diversity we expect of our editorial staff,” Schusterem said.
“We have to make sure that we are welcoming, inclusive, and welcoming of everybody,” he added.
The CEO of New York Times is calling on NYT to diversify its editorial team.
In a memo, the Times’ editor in chief, Dean Baquet, said the NYT has a diverse editorial team, but that its culture has not changed since he took over in December.
A new hiring round for NYT is in the works, he wrote, adding that the company would hire 10 women, 2 people of color, 1 with disabilities, and 1 of color with a disability by the end of January.
Schusterman said he was confident NYT would be a better place in January.
“This will be the most diverse editorial staff in history, and we have the best talent in the business,” he said, adding: “I believe we will create the world’s most diverse newspaper.” Read More “I’m excited about our new editorial team,” he told Recio.
“We’re going to be hiring people who know what they’re doing, people who are comfortable with their opinions, people with a good feel for the business.
I’m looking forward to the diversity, and I hope we have a great editorial team that will create an amazing newsroom.”
The memo was sent as part of a broader effort to hire more people of diverse backgrounds at NYT.
Baquet told Recoded he was not aware of any NYT hires made on merit or that they were based on race.
While Baquet did not elaborate on the diversity plans for NYT, he did say the company is looking to add more diversity and inclusion in its editorial.
He also said that the hiring of more women and people of colour was important, and that NYT will do more to hire people of different races and ethnicities.
“The diversity we’re looking for is the diversity in our editorial teams and the inclusion of diverse perspectives in our reporting,” Baquet said.
