A lawyer for Donald Trump’s family has filed a federal lawsuit alleging a Las Vegas-based law firm violated the constitutional rights of a client by leaking documents related to a 2016 leak of his personal financial information to a Washington newspaper.
David Cohen, a former lawyer for Trump’s presidential campaign, said in a lawsuit filed Thursday in Nevada that the law firm that he represented and his wife filed a motion to dismiss on Tuesday.
He said the lawsuit also names the Las Vegas office of the law firms office as a defendant.
“It’s a massive amount of information, and we were not able to obtain it because we were sued by a Trump family member,” Cohen said in an interview.
Cohen said the family has no money and no assets and cannot afford to hire a lawyer.
He added that the lawsuit could be the first of several filed by Trump associates against the law offices that represent them.
The suit seeks unspecified damages, and Cohen said the filing also seeks an order directing the firm to destroy documents related the leak.
Trump has been accused of colluding with the media during the 2016 presidential campaign to advance his candidacy.
He denied the allegations.
